Rumor: 2016 Shelby GT350R Destroys Z/28′s Lap Time at the Nurburgring

The rumor mill has been working overtime with the most recent claim that the new 2016 Shelby GT350R lapped the Nurburgring in 7 minutes and 32.19 seconds! Going around the ring at that speed would mean the new GT350R faster than the Chevrolet Camaro Z/28 and the Porsche 997 GT3 RS.

There has been an abundance of spy video of the Shelby GT350 and 350R testing on the Nurburgring, but there was never any reported lap times. The story of the GT350′s blistering fast lap originally broke from Horsepower Kings and has since made its rounds around the internet.

While there is no (known) video of this lap time to substantiate the claim, it is entirely possible and probable that the new S550 Shelby Mustang lapped the ring in this time, if not a little quicker. The GT350/GT350R is direct competition for the Z/28 Camaro and was created with the Camaro in mind. While the new GT350 was being developed, it was being held up to and pitted against competitors like the Camaro Z/28 as well as the Porsche GT3 and BMW M4. The GT350R’s time of 7:32.19 is 5 seconds faster than the Z/28′s 7:37.40 lap time at the Nurburgring.

Both the GT350 and the track ready GT350R benefit from the new Voodoo engine, which is the most powerful NA production V8 to come from Ford, but the GT350R benefits from a long list of parts to help it conquer the track. Removing the AC unit, exhaust resonators, stereo, rear seats, trunk floorboard and carpet, backup camera, tire sealer and inflator saved a ton of weight, which becomes even more pronounced when you factor in added carbon fiber pieces including carbon fiber wheels.

It is only a matter of time until Ford releases official numbers, including lap times and videos. Be sure to check back for updated details and numbers.
